PROPOSED
BIKE / PEDESTRIAN LINK
THROUGH THE
‘HOOD

The Phelps Neighborhood
Association (PNA) has
written a letter of
endorsement to a proposed
bicycle and pedestrian
transit way passing through
our neighborhood. The
concept plan presented to
the PNA Executive Committee
indicates a transit way
passing directly through the
neighborhood, providing
links between existing and
planned linear park trails
(greenways). The City
of Springfield is seeking a
US Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD)
Grant for a $2,000,000
Sustainable Communities
Planning Grant to plan and
construct these links.
The plan is to provide a
more comprehensive bicycle
and pedestrian system on
streets with low-volume
vehicular traffic and
provide safe crossings at
major streets.
The system of links would be
called The Link.
It is intended to have very
recognizable, color-coded
signage that will inform
users and motorist alike of
the routes. In
addition to providing links
between the linear park
trails, there would be
improved bicycle and
pedestrian access to retail,
service, and educational
facilities in the
Springfield core.
These facilities include:
Doling Park, Central Bible
College, Commercial Street,
Drury University, OTC, Idea
Commons, Downtown, Missouri
State University, Phelps
Grove Park, St. John’s
Hospital, McDaniel Park,
Battlefield Mall and Cox
South Hospital. The
Link would also provide
enhanced facilities such as
shelters and bike racks to
be installed. There is
also the potential to
demonstrate innovative storm
water solutions to reduce
localized drainage issues
along The Link.
